About
We are excited to present two of our groups Baliphonics and Transcoatal Collective as part of the WINGS Festival of Arts at the Janakaraliya Tent on Planetarium Grounds.
Båliphonics presents the music of the low-country båli ritual tradition of Sri Lanka in a sublime collaboration with contemporary jazz and improvisation. Like many traditional practices in Sri Lanka, the bali ritual is facing extinction due to effects of globalization and changes in modern society. With their impressive live performances, the Båliphonics shows true potential in keeping this ritual music alive in a global contemporary context.
Musicmatters Transcoastal Collective is a collaborative group consisting of musicians from the Western and Eastern coasts of Sri Lanka. Initiated through a GIZ-FLICT Art Link programme, the ensemble reworks folk music from the region of Batticaloa using instruments, arrangements and improvisations not traditionally associated with the music. Since the completion of their GIZ project, the ensemble has gone onto perform at Galle Music Festival and Musicmatters Festival this year and meets frequently to further explore musical possibilities through their collaboration
Free entry. 6.30pm start.
